Last week did not go according to plan.
My nanny got sick. I had a trip to New York already on the calendar. And then, of course, I got sick too.
For months I’ve been building habits that make me feel strong and like myself: walking every day, strength training two to three times a week, paying attention to how I’m nourishing myself.
Last week, most of that went sideways.
Strength training? Didn’t happen. Not once.
Eating well? I was a B- at best.
Walking? That one I kept, sort of. Since I was in NYC, I chose to walk instead of taking the subway whenever I could. Not a workout. Just walking.
And here’s what I’ve noticed now that I’m back home this week:
I’m not starting over.
I’m just returning.
There was a time when a week like that would have sent me spiraling. I’d decide I’d “fallen off,” feel bad about it, and then wait for a fresh Monday to start the whole thing again from zero.
The older I get, the more I believe this is what consistency really is. The ability to lovingly come back.
No beating yourself up. No big story about what it means. Just returning to the habits that make you feel good in your body.
And that only works if you’ve built habits small enough to return to in the first place.
So this week, on my first walk back, I gave myself a mantra:
Whatever the week,
wherever I turn,
I always come back,
I always return.
I said it with each step for the first five minutes of my walk. Try it on your next walk. It’s a small way to practice coming back without making it mean anything.
That’s what I’ve built The Movement around: the walks, the strength, and the inner work that makes it all stick. One habit at a time, with a 7-day starter program for anyone who’s starting fresh or coming back after a messy stretch.
Your first 7 days are free. And I would be honored to have you.
