You’re Doing a Great Job!

I was being interviewed by my friend for her podcast yesterday. (I’ll share it when it comes out, it was a goodie!)

She’s a mama to a little girl and after we finished our chat, she told me that she had given a mug to a dear friend of hers who just had a baby, with a very important message on it.

The mug said:

“You’re doing a great freakin’ job.”

(Only it didn’t say freakin’. It had a stronger expletive;)

She told me, “In the late night feedings, when you are tired beyond your imagination and you think you can’t go on another day, remember…

You’re doing a great freakin’ job.”

Obviously, I loved it, because I love mantras and as I embark on motherhood, I imagine I am going to need this when I am in the weeds.

However, I got off the call and I wondered why I don’t tell myself this more often?

Why should I wait until I am at the depths of my despair and feel like I am failing to remind myself I am doing a great job?

Why do I think that I only deserve this kind of praise when I’m on my knees, not able to take another step?

Why do we not give this to ourselves more regularly?

Later that day, I headed to get a prenatal massage. (A treat that MUST be indulged in at this stage of the game.)

Jody, the amazing massage therapist asked me some questions about how I was feeling, what I was doing, how I was moving my body.

Obviously, I have been far from perfect. My back hurts. My hips hurt. My workouts have slowed down and many days I just want carbs and sugar.

As I shared the things I was doing, she put her hand on my shoulder and said, “Erin, you’re doing a great job. A GREAT JOB!”

I almost started crying because clearly this was the message of the day.

Here I was thinking that I was failing at being pregnant and should be doing a better job!

So, this is a message I wanted to pass on to you.

Wherever you are.
Whatever you are doing.
Whatever you are going through.
Even if it’s the hardest time of your life.
Or you are in a season where things are flowin’ like water…

You’re doing a GREAT job.

Being a human is not always easy.

Being an adult with responsibilities is not easy.

Taking care of ourselves is not always easy.

Paying all our bills is not always easy.

Dealing with today’s world is certainly not easy.

So even if you feel like you are not doing any of these things perfectly (who does, anyway!), you are showing up each day and doing your best.

And that’s good enough.

You’re doing a GREAT job.

Please, say that to yourself today. I’m doing a great job. And repeat it as needed.

And not like in the, “everybody gets a trophy kind of way!”

But in a way to soothe the parts of your soul that might feel weary today.

Say it to the parts of yourself that are being too hard on yourself today.

Say it in response to someone who may have been unkind or unloving.

Say it to yourself for the people who are not able to say it to themselves.

You’re doing a great job.

If you could use some help resetting your inner dialogue, if you need some help starting a daily exercise routine with that, if you are looking to start off small, if you are looking to gain more energy and confidence…
