The Mantra That Changed Everything

How To Decide What You Want

There Is No Wagon To Fall From. Only Life!

I was contemplating what I wanted the theme of my Shrink Session classes to be this month. Being that it’s November and we are approaching Thanksgiving here in the US, the obvious choice was gratitude.

However, I am a little embarrassed to admit this, but I literally had the thought, “Ugh, that theme is just so played out. Everyone talks about it.”

Then I thought, oooh, yikes, that’s awful. Clearly, someone is not practicing it quite enough otherwise I am pretty certain that would NOT have been my reaction.

And while yes, GRATITUDE is a hot topic amongst self helpy, spiritual types, my guess is that I am not the only one who could use a gratitude adjustment.

So I decided, yes! I am going to make it my theme in order to put my grateful muscle on a more regular routine.

With that, I want to share a special guest post by one of my Shrink Session teachers, Olivia. (Olivia’s husband was the one who inspired last weeks post on the real REWARD you get when you succeed. So you could say the Binnings are taking over the Erin Stutland air waves lately.)

Her story on gratitude literally made me LOL when I read it and I thought you would enjoy it as well. Plus I think she makes a great point in saying it is not enough to just make a list of what you are grateful for, but to take some action.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you Olivia Petzy-Binning.

(Here she is cheering her husband on in the race. She has a good sense of humor indeed.)

Why I needed a Grattitude Adjustment by Olivia Petzy-Binning

Two weeks ago, I went home to Massachusetts to see my dad in his first musical since, um, ever. He was in a community theater production of Les Miserables and I kid you not, it was amazing.

75 people singing for their lives onstage. 40 musicians blasting their synths in the pit. 1200 people weeping in the audience. And my dad, doling out justice as a judge, soliciting women as a john (awkward/hilarious), sliding down a wall when he got shot in the barricade, and waltzing like he was a contestant on Dancing with the Stars Season 67. I was absurdly thrilled with the whole thing.

Yes, I am a proud Daddy’s Girl (and shout out to my amazing Mum, too!). Not in a weird Veruca Salt way, but like a “he drove me to school every day for 12 years, I did homework in his classroom every day for 5 years, he cried when my husband asked if he could marry me, and tells me things like ‘Liv, what is the point of a life coach when I am here to whip you into shape?’ way.” I am a lucky duck.

HOWEVER…

There was a period of time, say, from ages 13-17, when we were not so close. We butted heads in a MAJOR way. All our communication was held at max volume. Doors slammed. I called him “Fidel.” A lemon was thrown (that’s a story for another day).

His constant refrain through all this angsty madness?

“Olivia Jayne, you need an Attitude Adjustment.”

I WANTED TO THROW SOMETHING EVERY TIME HE SAID THAT. LITERALLY THE MOST ANNOYING THING EVER.

And yet…

He was 100000% correct. The only thing wrong with my lovely, supported, full life was my attitude. I needed an adjustment.

We cannot direct the wind, but we can adjust our sails.

We always have the power to pause, breathe, and adjust. It can be tough. But we can do it.

Was it totally unfair that my dad wouldn’t let me stay at Trisha’s house until 2 AM, even though everyone else was? Hmm. Maybe. But maybe he didn’t feel like staying up until 2 AM because he taught 250 middle schoolers all day and then drove me to a track meet and stood in the cold and then rushed me to a rehearsal 40 minutes in the opposite direction and graded papers and then drove home and made dinner (the man also cooks) and maybe he wanted to just go the eff to sleep at 9 PM on a Friday night. Or watch a movie with my Mom (and then go to sleep). Or play the piano for 3 hours (and then go to sleep). Maybe I was the one acting unfairly here.

Imagine if I had thought “well, he said I can stay until midnight, and he did chauffeur me around all day, so that will have to be good enough” and then MOVED ON instead of crying for 3 hours, thus wasting the majority of the time I could have been at Trisha’s house? Imagine if I had been GRATEFUL?!

I would have been a freak teenager, that’s what. BUT a freak teenager without a headache from crying and listening to Alanis.

Fortunately, I’m still alive and kicking long past those teen years, and I’ve learned a thing or two about the power of an attitude of gratitude…a GRATTITUDE.

Focusing on what you are grateful for is an incredibly powerful quick trick to get out of angsty teen mode. I know this isn’t news to you. Your grandma probably had a book on the back of her toilet called “Be Grateful Every Day” or something like that.

But it’s not enough to just compile a mental list of happy thoughts. You gotta DO something. Many tiny adjustments over time add up to a major, giant shift.

-Send someone a thank-you note.
-Pick up the phone and call someone to say thank you.
-Take a friend or two out for coffee as a way of saying thank you.

But commit to actually doing something.

One more thing about my Dad: when his birthday rolled around and I asked what he wanted, he always said “your love and appreciation. That’s it.”

Let’s crank that up. For my dad, guys. He deserves it. I threw a lemon at his head.

  2. Giselle says:

    Hi Erin!
That was funny and yet something that got me thinking about how I’m sometimes unfair in order to get what I want. It’s not that I’m not thankful for having what I’ve got, but I guess I forget to be grateful with life, people and things that surround me all-the-time.
Anyway, thanks for this post n.n I always look forward to check my e-mail in order for me to read your messages. So I’ll wait til next one 😉

    • Olivia says:

      Hi Giselle,

Wow, I looooove how you said you can be “unfair” to get what you want. What a brave realization- and I am pretty certain we all do it. You’re not alone! It’s easier to be like “wah wah woe is me,” so we can get a little stuck. BUT if, like you said, we can find appreciation for the little things around us all the time, we recognize our many gifts and treasures.

I am grateful for your interesting comment!

      Love,
      Olivia

  3. Aldys says:

Hey there lovely lady, thank you so much for sharing this post! It made me laugh but also made me realize how grateful I am for my loving family & friends. A great reminder, to put some action behind my gratitude!
    Thanks a bunch!

    • Olivia says:

      Hi Aldys,

I’m so glad you enjoyed the post. The best part of putting actions behind gratitude is that just like developing a GRATTITUDE, it will become second nature! The more ya practice, the more it becomes part of you. Go forth and appreciate!

      Love,
      Olivia xo

  4. Sue says:

Hi Erin & Olivia–I want to say a deep, appreciative thank you for that post! I have had a work thing going on; my boss changed things up & around due to an Interaction with a customer & I have been all worked up (since before then, actually). Yup, I’ve been acting like and angsty teenager. I’ve know all along that only I could shift things, been tapping like crazy, but it took the two of you to heave me off my little heap of gravel onto the green grass. I really needed the help, and you gave it. Like a personal counseling session, only it cost less and was more valuable. I’ve got a grip on it now!

    Lovin’ the shrink stuff!!!

    Sue

    • Olivia says:

      Sue! Get it, girl!

The leap from that gravel pile to the green grass is small but deep, and it feels risky to make the jump. I am proud of you for recognizing your angsty teenager and telling her to put on her big girl panties!

I am so happy to hear that you’re feeling more like your best self now- keep moving upward, sister!

      Love,
      Olivia xo

  5. Oh i love this so much – so true – my poor Mum!

In about 8 years I think I will read this to my own daughter – I can already see the lemons flying!

    Thank you for sharing.

    Kate xo

    • Olivia says:

      Hi Kate!

I’m so glad to hear that this resonated with you, and I am so excited to think of you reading it to your own daughter someday!

      Lots of love to you,
      Olivia xxxoooo

  6. Cherese says:

Hi, I’m Cherese and I’m from the lovely city of Philadelphia.

    1. I have been doing Erin Stutland’s Shrink Session since Dec-Jan…I anxiously awaited the program to be sent so I could download them.

    2. I bought the program because it allows me to incorporate variety into my workout schedule. It revives my positive spirit. I was a cheerleader for years and I believe it continues to keep my strength and positive attitude in practice.

    3. What I love about Shrink Session is it makes my strength shine more and what makes it different from anything else I have tried…is it makes me laugh HARDER, moves my booty LIKE MY CHILDHOOD CHEER DAYS and makes me a TRUE believer in my affirmations.

    4. The results… the workout is one I will keep forever in my workout routine. I do some cardio days and other yoga days and this brings my energy and laughter into it all. I notice my attitude has shined brighter and my strength increased. Erin makes it fun and appears goofy at times and I feel that is me (most times…ha). I know everyone gets something different out of this workout but for me, it has benefited me in more ways than one. I also notice my body feels tighter when I do these workouts…even for a few days. I’m sure my increase in laughter has helped in that.

    5. I would recommend this because… really, WHY NOT? Each individual needs a little fun in their life and whether you do this by yourself or with a buddy, it makes you feel better. I noticed myself being more of a believer, stronger and really empowered to do something…whether small or big. I’ve done things this past year which have put me outside my comfort zone and really challenged me. For that, I thank Erin and Shrink Session for entering my home.
I look forward to fun and new workouts!!! Maybe some yoga included 🙂

This is so funny! The “Your ass looks amazing” poster cracked me up!
